Behind the Scenes: The Art of the Vivienne Westwood Corset
Thu 4 May 2017, 16:00 – 17:30 BST
Vivienne Westwood’s boutique on Davies Street opens for an exclusive haute-couture showcase, which includes a talk and demonstration, giving guests the opportunity to explore the artistry behind the Vivienne Westwood corset.
Vivienne Westwood is one of the last independent global fashion organisations in the world and continues to be at the forefront of British design, capturing the creative imagination, whilst raising awareness on both environmental and human rights issues. With a design record spanning over forty years, Vivienne Westwood is recognized as a truly international fashion house, and Westwood herself as one of the most influential designers and activists in the world today.
Corsetry is a technique which has long been associated with Vivienne Westwood. In the 1980s Westwood was the first 20th century designer to use the corset in it’s original form reinterpreting it using modern sewing techniques and stretch fabrics to bring it to date. Since then, the house has not only used traditional corsetry in its collections, but has also utilised the technique to play with the proportions of the body.
This is an exclusive chance to meet the couture team at Vivienne Westwood who have played a part in creating and developing the most iconic and well-known of Westwood pieces. In this showcase, their design team will walk guests through the history, design and craft processes, including the various stages of a corset construction, whilst sparkling wine, high-tea and canapes are served.
