Event description
This talk takes an insider look at Chintz: Cotton in Bloom, the latest exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London.

About this event

Gill Cochrane, Collections and Touring Exhibitions Officer at the Fashion and Textile Museum will give us a unique look at what happens "behind the seams" of a costume exhibition. Discover how sumptuous hand-printed cotton cloth was originally produced in India and why it came to prominence in European society in the 18th century, particularly in the Netherlands where the collection in this exhibition originates. Uncover some of the secrets hidden within several pieces on display and explore how chintz was used – and re-used - in garment construction in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Explore some of the most beautiful fabrics and well-constructed garments of the period.
