Being an Artistic Director
A two-session day held at the Royal Court
10am - 12pm - Artistic Director Panel Discussion.
What is it really like being an Artistic Director of a theatre building? How does a freelance director become an Artistic Director? How does taking on an Artistic Directorship affect a director's work? What kinds of challenges do Artistic Directors face - both in the day-to-day and in the broader context of our current economic climate and global backdrop? Experienced Artistic Directors Kerry Michael (Theatre Royal Stratford East), Josie Rourke (Donmar) and Tom Morris (Bristol Old Vic) discuss their experiences of being Artistic Directors - their routes into their current roles, their learning along the way and their advice to directors aspiring to become Artistic Directors in the future.
12.30pm - 2pm Running a Small Company
After a short break, we will begin an informal conversation hosted by Sophie Austin, Artistic Director of Teatro Vivo, for Artistic Directors of small to mid-scale companies keen to share their experiences and challenges.
