Description

Join us as Northumbria University celebrates the 2018 Being Human Festival!

Do celebrities ever really die? Some famous figures are believed to live on not just in terms of their cultural legacy, but also in a more literal sense. Decades after his death on St Helena, people continued to believe that Napoleon would one day return. The Irish politician Charles Stewart Parnell was spotted at the opera shortly after his death in 1891. And rumours persist that Elvis is living out a peaceful retirement in the American South. Others, like Russia’s ‘mad monk’ Grigori Rasputin, were notoriously immune to death. Join us for an evening of talks, screenings, and music to share some of these strange stories, from post-mortem sightings to resurrections in re-enactment. Why do we find it so hard to accept the deaths of cultural icons? Why were some figures believed to be so hard to kill? Why do these myths begin, and why do some of the famous dead live forever?

The Being Human Festival highlights the way in which the humanities can inspire and enrich our everyday lives, help us to understand ourselves, our relationships with others, and the challenges we face in a changing world. Northumbria University is responding to this year's festival theme of 'Origins and Endings' with a series of events across Newcastle upon Tyne exploring 'Life Stories': stories of new beginnings, origins of art and literature, death and afterlives, and the end of the world.

PLEASE NOTE: As our Festival events are free, not everyone who asks for tickets comes to our events. To make sure we have a full house we allocate more tickets than there are seats. Admission is on a first come, first served basis, so please arrive in good time for the start of the event.
