Desire is one of the things that make us human. Advertising tries to colonise and satisfy it with commodity solutions. But humans have always sought to expand it beyond the here and now in search of something or somewhere better. In 1516 Thomas More named this desire ‘utopia’. Utopian desire invites us to demand the seemingly impossible. Is it, therefore, always hopelessly unrealistic? Professor John Storey will explore the concept of utopia and the practice of utopianism, including how we might distinguish between reality and the real.
