Event Details

If dance classes (including ballet classes) for older learners are to be inclusive, it is imperative that dance teachers are able to cater for the needs of learners who may otherwise not take part in dance classes because of on-going neurological conditions. This one-day workshop introduces participants to some of the more common neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia, through the exploration and practice of different approaches and strategies which can be drawn upon in devising and delivering inclusive and differentiates dance classes.

The morning sessions will be practice-based, exploring some of the key skills required to lead dance and dance-focussed classes for older learners who present varying degrees of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia. Through practical group work and discussion, participants will engage in and create activities which offer ideas and ways of working with this group of learners, so that the structure, content and teaching of their dance classes are shaped by principles of inclusivity. The afternoon sessions will develop on from the morning by exploring further some of the physical, social and emotional challenges associated with ageing.

Throughout the workshop, participants will be challenged in how they think about and teach dance to older learners living with neurological conditions.

Please note, by attending this workshop participants will not be qualified to counsel and/or provide specialist advice to students/individuals in dealing with mental health or neurological conditions.
