About this event

Being Queer in the Island of 1000 Mosques is a new collection of writings by trans and queer people living on the island of Lombok in Indonesia. The collection arose from a series of workshops and a participatory process run by the GENERATE (Gender, Generation and Climate Change: Creative Approaches to Building Inclusive and Climate Resilient Cities in Uganda and Indonesia) project in which trans and queer people from Lombok wrote about their lives and personal experiences. The accounts cover diverse themes including the process of growing up, religion, community, HIV and sexual health, the risks of climate change for trans and queer people, and more.

This event will introduce the process through which the collection was created, followed by readings by two of the participants/authors. This will be followed by questions and discussions with the collection’s editor and the participants.

The event will involve simultaneous translation between Indonesian and English.
