Event description

Description

About the film

A simple, sheltered gardener becomes an unlikely trusted advisor to a powerful businessman and an insider in Washington politics.

Introduced by Howard Schuman

"I am delighted to be presenting Being There; this is a rare chance to see one of the key American films of the late 70s. Featuring a stunning performance by Peter Sellers and fine work by a distinguished supporting cast, Being There is a brilliantly written and directed satirical fable about the intersection of absolutely empty celebrity with the emptiness of modern political culture. If anything, the film is more resonant now than it was when first released in 1979. Please join us if you possibly can..."

Brooklyn born Howard Schuman has lived in London for nearly fifty years. Before finally retiring in 2013, he was an award winning television writer, radio broadcaster and television presenter, fronting BBC's highly acclaimed Moving Pictures from 1991-96. He also taught screen writing and cinema history at the National School of Film and Television.
