Description

Join Wendy Erskine, Jan Carson and Jamie Guiney to discuss The Art of the Short Story!

“The short story apologizes for nothing. It exults in its shortness” said Stephen Milhauser.
The short story is a unique form. A condensed expression of ideas and words, both reading and writing short stories are very different experiences to reading or writing novels. Join some of our finest Northern Irish short story writers for an in depth discussion on the creative process of short story writing, and reading. Jan Carson, Wendy Erskine and Jamie Guiney will be discussing what drew them to the short form, the special skills involved in writing short stories, their influences and the present and future of the short story.

Jan Carson is a writer, broadcaster and freelance community arts facilitator. She has published two novels, a short story collection and a flash fiction anthology of postcard stories. Her work has appeared in numerous journals and on BBC Radio 3 and 4. In 2016 she won the Harper’s Bazaar short story competition and was shortlisted for the Seán Ó Faoláin Short Story Prize.

Wendy Erskine is a Belfast based teacher and writer. Her debut collection is Sweet Home, which was nominated for the Republic of Consciousness Prize. Her work has been published in The Stinging Fly, Stinging Fly Stories and Female Lines: New Writing by Women from Northern Ireland. She also features in Being Various: New Irish Short Stories (Faber and Faber), Winter Papers and on BBC Radio 4.

Jamie Guiney is a literary fiction writer from County Armagh. Jamie's short stories have been published internationally and he has been nominated twice for the 'The Pushcart Prize.' Jamie is a graduate of the Faber & Faber Writing Academy and has twice been a judge for short story competition 'The New Rose Prize.' His debut collection is The Wooden Hill.
