Event description

Description

Musician and writer Ben Watt is most well-known for his seventeen years as songwriter-performer-producer with Tracey Thorn in Everything But The Girl (1983-2000) and subsequent ten years as an acclaimed DJ, BBC 6Music presenter and label owner of Buzzin' Fly.

Before Everything But The Girl, his early recordings as a young solo artist in the early 80s drew comparisons with John Martyn and Tim Buckley. He collaborated with Robert Wyatt on his breakthrough 5-track EP ‘Summer into Winter’ in 1982, and his minimal folk-jazz debut ‘North Marine Drive’ was an UK Independent Chart top ten album in 1983.

In 2014 he returned to his folk-jazz roots, teaming up with guitarist-sideman Bernard Butler for the award-winning album ‘Hendra’. The follow-up 'Fever Dream' was released in spring 2016 to further acclaim.

He has also written two much-admired memoirs: the first, 'Patient' (a New York Times Notable Book of the Year) detailed his near-death experience with a rare illness in the early nineties; the most recent, ‘Romany and Tom’, a fearless portrait of his parents' marriage, was nominated for the prestigious Samuel Johnson Prize in 2014.
