Description

Increased awareness of the benefits of the use of mediation for private, public and third sector organisations to resolve workplace conflict and settle disputes. An opportunity to learn how mediation works in practice and consider how it could be used effectively in their organisation, including examining the benefits of a workplace mediation scheme. A brief look at the difference between workplace and employment mediation.

This workshop provides an introduction to the use of facilitative mediation in the workplace. Areas to be covered include:-

• What is mediation ( and what it is not )
• The benefits of Mediation to organisations and to individuals
• The changing workplace
• Sources of workplace conflict
• The process
• The role of the mediator
• Employment mediation

This will be an interactive session with opportunities for questions and discussion.

Tutor profile - Alan Brown has enjoyed a career in education for over 33 years both in England and in Guernsey. He was a teacher in mainstream and special schools and Local Authority support services in and around the West Midlands, before moving to Guernsey in 2001. He worked as a Headteacher before moving to the States of Guernsey civil service as Deputy Director of Education and was then appointed as Director of Education in 2012.He retired from the post at the end of 2017.

He has broad experience of working with people from a wide range of backgrounds. This obviously has included parents and pupils but also a wide range of educational, health and social care professionals. In his senior positions Alan has also worked with lawyers, union officials, architects and project managers in addition to civil servants and politicians from across the U.K. and other crown dependencies. He has extensive experience of working with third sector organisations.
Through his varied roles Alan has been involved in counselling, coaching and conflict resolution for many years. He has developed the comprehensive and highly effective skills and personal qualities, required for successful mediation.
Alan is a registered mediator with the Civil Mediation Council and is also a member of the Society of Mediators.
