Event Details

During the interwar, Bermondsey Metropolitan

Borough Council sought to, in the words of the

1925 Labour manifesto, “…to make Bermondsey

a decent, wholesome and healthy place for the

120,000 common folk who have to live and work

here. We want our borough to be a city of which

all its citizens can be proud.” In making Bermondsey

proud of itself, the council sought to create a new,

modern, healthy city – and a modern, healthy,

forward-thinking community. In fact, Bermondsey

was the first municipality in the country to make

its own public information films: they were a

critical means of spreading the message of

good health and civic pride.

Southwark Local History Library and Archive

in association with Sands Film Studios invites

you to a screening of four films made by the

Bermondsey Borough Council between 1928

and 1937 including the recently digitised film,

‘Oppin, about the hop picking holidays

regularly taken by Southwark’s residents until

after the Second World War.
