BES Macro 2018 is the annual meeting of the BES Macroecology (and macroevolution) SIG. Each year we aim to highlight all kinds of macro-scale research, across diverse taxa, timescales, and career stages. We hope you'll join us in St Andrews for two days of macro-fun! Details of the conference can be found below, or feel free to contact us on Facebook or Twitter (@BESMacroecol) with any questions.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

  • Brian McGill (University of Maine)

  • Nathalie Pettorelli (Zoological Society of London)

  • Bob O’Hara (Norwegian University of Science and Technology)

  • Anne Magurran (University of St Andrews)

  • ...and a student plenary speaker, to be determined!

Plus...

  • Break-out sessions on computational techniques

  • A workshop on communicating science through the arts

  • An optional authentic science-themed Scottish cèilidh!

  • And of course the usual talks, posters, and socialising.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation in St Andrews will be very limited, as the town is small and as we will be competing with the golf. We recommend you book as soon as possible.

We have arranged that the conference can book up to 80 rooms through the University, which we will allocate on a first come, first served basis. These rooms are all singles within a few minutes’ walk of the conference venue and include breakfast. Nicer ensuite rooms are £186 (plus booking fee) for 3 nights; standard rooms with shared facilities (limit 20) are £147 (plus booking fee) for 3 nights, check-in Monday July 9 and check-out Thursday July 12. These rooms can be booked through this page (you need to buy a ticket for registration and a ticket for the accomodation).

If you prefer, you can also book rooms through the University of St Andrews “Summer Holiday Accommodation” (https://ace.st-andrews.ac.uk/), the St Andrews Tourist Hostel (http://www.hostelsstandrews.com/), the Premier Inn, or AirBnB. If anyone is interested in room/apartment sharing feel free to organise this via our Facebook page or Twitter.

TALKS AND POSTERS

We will have slots for talks and space for posters at the meeting. Talks will be 5 minutes long. There may not be enough talk slots for everyone, so priority will be given to early career researchers. Please include a rough title when you register so we have an idea of the balance of topics (you can change it later). Students will also be given the option to put themselves forward for the student plenary talk (20 minutes). We highly recommend applying; it's fun and a great thing to put on your CV. Thanks to a generous donation, for the student plenary speaker we will be able to reimburse up to £100 of the travel and £186 of the accommodation costs.

CONFERENCE DINNER

To cut costs we have not organised an official conference dinner this year. Instead we will book tables at a local pub for anyone who wants to come along on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The conference registration includes lunch on both days, as well as coffee/tea/etc and a Tuesday early-evening wine reception.

CEILIDH

On Tuesday night, we have arranged for an optional “science-themed” cèilidh. (For those not from the UK, a cèilidh is a Scottish group folk dance, and St Andrews is the home of the world’s largest street cèilidh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArTwHV0rH78) Tickets must be purchased separately through this site and cost £12 (plus booking fee). Partners, friends, etc, most welcome!

ACCESSIBILITY

The conference venue is fully wheelchair-accessible. See https://byretheatre.com/about-us/wheelchair-access/ for more information. If you have any other accessibility or other need (e.g., lactation room, prayer space), please do indicate this on your registration form. If you have any questions, please contact Catherine Sheard, ces29 (at) st-andrews (dot) ac (dot) uk.
