Event description

Description

Specifically for newly qualified Best Interests Assessors or those who have not practiced recently, this BIA update training will help you get started. If you’re qualified as a Best Interests Assessor (A professional who completes assessments under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards) then it is vital to your continued practice that you undergo annual professional development or training specific to your role. We’ve developed a day-long BIA update training course which can be used as 6 hours of CPD.

The course has been developed by Gary Crisp, an experienced social worker and practicing Best Interests Assessor. Gary has a particular interest in the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and our BIA Update Training reflects this, so if you’d like to sharpen up your mental capacity assessment and report writing skills then this course is for you. The course also looks at current case law of interest and other elements of the BIA role. You'll have those all-important questions answered such as; What conditions can I recommend? How long an authorisation should I recommend? and What is a well written report? The day also provides opportunities for you to ask and have answered questions you might have in a safe environment.

Our Best Interests Assessor Update Training for newly qualified BIAs includes the following elements:

  • A refresher session of what constitutes a deprivation of liberty and why the BIA role is required

  • An analysis of mental capacity assessments and identification of the elements that constitute an excellent assessment

  • A reflection of key case law relevant to mental capacity and deprivation of liberty. Key pieces of legislation as well as the most recent case law will be examined

  • Consideration of how Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) relates to Article 8 rights to respect for private life, home, correspondence and family life

  • Help to develop your report writing skills and the essential elements of a quality DoLS assessment

  • When is DoLS a DoL?

  • An overview of the main points of the Law Commission’s proposals: The Liberty Protection Safeguards and an update of where the proposals are in relation to becoming law

All of our courses are easily accessible either by car or public transport and will be in the city advertised. The exact details will be confirmed at least 10 days prior to the course start date.
