About this event

DSDC’s award winning ‘Best practice in dementia care' facilitator training has been running as a face to face course since 2008 and we are now delighted to be able to offer this course online.

Training commitment

Facilitators, who are nominated by their organisation to take on the role, will complete the course over a two week period. The course materials are available from day one, and designed to be accessed at your own pace, allowing you to schedule around work and personal commitments. In addition there are a number of discussion boards which will require interaction and you will have access to the DSDC staff, should any issues arise. After the two weeks, Facilitators will have a further seven days to complete and submit the course assignment.

Course assignment

Once you have worked through the content you will be asked to submit a reflective account relating to the benefits of Best Practice being implemented in your workplace and how you intend to roll out the programme. On successful completion you will become a Registered Facilitator allowing you to support up to eight colleagues through the programme, using a cascade approach.

The learning outcomes are:

1. Exhibit a greater understanding of dementia and its impact on the individual

2. Engage in a reflective evaluation of caring interventions and change their practice accordingly

3. Implement a person-centred approach to care

4. Demonstrate evidence-based caring interventions

5. Demonstrate a more expansive use of communication skills when interacting with and understanding the needs of the people with dementia

6. Recognise the role of the carer/family, their needs and possible support networks.

The training content includes:

  • Dementia types and prevalence
  • The impact of ageing and dementia
  • Dementia and co-morbidities
  • Communication and behaviour
  • Overview of dementia strategies
  • Positive personhood and person-centred care
  • ‘Darkness in the Afternoon’
  • Terminology
  • Life story
  • Positive risk enablement
  • Dementia aware environments

Course fee

The programme fee is £1,500 and includes the online facilitator training, all facilitator materials, eight learner packs with study guides, support and guidance for DSDC, marking of coursework, feedback and certificates of completion. The programme is Assured by City & Guilds and Accredited by RCN, with 16 hours of CPD
