What is health coaching?

Health coaching is a partnership and different type of conversation between health and care providers and people, which guides and prompts them to be more active participants in managing their health and wellbeing.

Detrimental health behaviours cause 60% of deaths and long term conditions are responsible for 70% of NHS costs. Only about a third to a half of people take their medications correctly. People know they need to look after their health, but often don’t know how, or how to change bad habits.

For people to make a change in how they manage their health and wellbeing, conversations with health and care professionals (and peers) need to cover where they are now, where they want to be and what they can do to get there with support.

Change is more likely when the conversation is underpinned by high rapport and a positive relationship, created by great listening, understanding and a sense of partnership.

This training aims to:

  • Enable you to understand the nature and role of health coaching in supporting the people you work with to increase their confidence to become active participants in their care, so that they can reach their self-identified goals.
  • Equip you to be able to identify people with different levels of knowledge, confidence, skills and motivation to manage their condition (activation) and to tailor your approach to enable positive change.

By the end of the programme you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate that you have the knowledge and skills to be able to adopt a coaching approach with the people you support.
  • Identify how coaching can support your clients to better manage their health and wellbeing.
  • Support people to identify and set goals that will improve their health and wellbeing.
  • Develop your own skills in reflective practice.

What is expected of me?

We ask you to commit to the following:

  • Attending 2 days training (course dates above). There will be some online reading between the 2 days, and a follow up webex.
  • Complete a short pre- and post- course online questionnaire to enable the Better Conversations programme team to understand how the training helps, and what parts are most effective.
  • Practice your new skills in your role.
