For July’s Better Together session, we will be joined by Mark Smith, Executive Director of Axis who will speak on the impact of AI.
AI isn't going away. It’s accelerating and becoming embedded in everything we do, often in places we may not have considered. So how should arts organisations respond? Do we resist, adapt, or find another way? In this session, Mark Smith will share how Axis, as a support organisation for contemporary visual artists, is beginning to explore these questions. He'll introduce Axis’s AI Ethics Framework, not as a set of answers, but as a starting point for thinking critically about how we engage with AI in ways that are ethical, transparent and centred on artists and core values.
Bi-monthly Better Together sessions are framed by a different urgent topic that is relevant to the East and West Midlands and wider arts and culture sector.
About Axis:Axis is a UK charity that champions contemporary visual artists. We support artists at all stages of their careers with resources, opportunities, and a platform to share their work. Our membership network is at the heart of everything we do - connecting artists, encouraging peer support, and showcasing a diverse range of practices.
We operate without public subsidy and are financially independent. This gives us the freedom to stay focused on what matters most: supporting artists on their terms.
We work with care, in collaboration, making space for more people to access and engage with work that’s thoughtful, challenging, and rooted in lived experiences.
Access:This session will take place online, via Zoom. Closed captions and a session transcript will be available during the session. The session will not be recorded, but an AI generated summary of the meeting will be shared with attendees.

The featured image uses A.I to visualize idea #69 from the original Book of Visions. The entry comes from a charity calling itself the Motorway Conversion Trust, whose aims are 1) to end all motorway and bypass construction, 2) to plough up existing motorways and convert them to vegetable plots and 3) to preserve 50 miles of motorway as a monument to technological fetishism.
