Event description

Description

Between Dog and Wolf is a collaboration between writer Jon Newman and artist David Western that uncovers the histories of three areas of South London: Battersea, Herne Hill and the Brighton Road.

The exhibition contrasts historical images, archival documents and objects with contemporary watercolour landscapes, mapping and sound recordings of each place, to reflect on vanished localities and current responses to a rapidly changing South London.

The exhibition will take you into some of the memory sites of South London: to explore James Whistler’s Battersea, as depicted in his Nocturnes and etchings, through John Ruskin’s despairing remembrance of Herne Hill, and past the many execution sites along the old Brighton Road between Kennington and Croydon. It considers how traces of the past have left their mark on the landscape and how these areas struggle to communicate that sense of place today.

Join writer and curator Jon Newman for a talk about the exhibition.
