Eligibility for a funded training place

For many years East Sussex has had a high rate of deaths by suicide. This is an issue that is particularly relevant for men, with three quarters of completed suicides by men, and suicide now the single biggest cause of death in men under 45 in the UK. Thanks to funding from the Public Health team at East Sussex County Council we are able to offer fully-funded half-day SafeTALK training to individuals and organisations working with men in East Sussex.

To be eligible for a funded place you must be working or volunteering with men in East Sussex. We appreciate that this a broad category – to help define this further we have provided a list of potential roles or areas of work on the booking form.

Please do get in touch if you have any questions around eligibility for the training.

Thank you to Walk2Run for working with Grassroots, and for running this event as part of World Suicide Prevention Day week.

Whole In-house Courses

If you feel your organisation would benefit from an in-house funded SafeTALK session for your staff, and have 20-30 staff/volunteers who would be able to attend then please do get in touch about this option. Alternatively, if you have less than 20 staff/volunteers able to attend the training then please book places as needed on one of our open courses. Do get in touch by phone or email to explore suitable options, and if you have any questions.

Course Content

SafeTALK - Suicide Alertness For Everyone - is a half-day course that can help you make a difference. Learn to identify people with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. This training prepares you to be a suicide alert helper by following the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe). These steps offer initial help in order to connect people having thoughts of suicide with more specialised support.

For more information about the course click here.

Timings & Breaks

The course runs from 6pm to 9pm.  It is important you arrive promptly– we promise to finish on time! We will have refreshment breaks during the session and drinks and biscuits will be provided.

Cancellations

If you have been allocated an East Sussex County Council funded place it is our policy to charge a fee (currently £25 for SafeTALK) for non-attendance with less than one week’s notice. Candidate substitutions can be made at any time. This is because there are certain costs that we incur in organising the course and these are non-refundable at short notice. We have introduced this policy because if we are unable to demonstrate good attendance to our funders it will be more difficult to secure future funding for these courses.

Organiser

Grassroots Suicide Prevention

Grassroots Suicide Prevention delivers training that saves lives. Very few, if any of us, are untouched by suicide. We believe that suicide is a community health problem and that suicide can be prevented.

We promote and deliver ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), a 2 day workshop that teaches a model of suicide first aid.

We offer a range of training programmes to complement ASIST, including SafeTALK (Suicide Alertness), One in Four (Mental Health Awareness) and Self Injury (Understanding & Working with Self Injury).

We are very happy to deliver courses in-house to your organisation; please ring or e-mail us to find out more.
