Event description

Description

Beyond is the research and development (R&D) conference for the creative industries, addressing the challenges and themes influencing and impacting the future of the sector. This year’s conference will explore the intersection between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and creativity

ABOUT BEYOND 2019

Attended by business leaders, creatives, researchers, policy makers, journalists, funders and anyone with an interest in the future of the creative industries. The inaugural Beyond, was held at London’s Barbican in November 2018, featured leading thinkers and practitioners including Professor Alex McDowell, Design Futurist at the World Building Institute (USC School of Cinematic Arts), exploring the dynamic relationship between research, academia and business innovation. Read more about Beyond 2018 here.

The 2019 programme will span two days and include a single-track conference supported by two exhibitions showcasing UK excellence in research-driven creative innovation and early career academic research, as well as networking events.

More details of the programme can be found below.

CONFERENCE THEMES

Featuring insights from the cutting-edge of creative research and industrial application, conference contributors will examine the realms of Informatics, to explore the current and future impact of machine learning, AI and data on the creative industries. There will be lively debate, keynote sessions, short-talks, panel discussions exploring the following themes:

Just a Member of the Band
How is AI helping us to be more creative and supporting our creative endeavours to take us beyond our human capabilities? This session will showcase new, innovative ideas, products and services where AI extends human abilities.

And the Award Goes to…
Can AI alone really do something creative and award worthy or do the creative industries present the greatest challenge for AI? Having explored the idea of AI as an assistant, this session will consider if AI can really become the author and take a leading role in creativity, and where do they figure on the credits.

Hidden Values: Data, Discovery and Recommendations
How can algorithms unlock unforeseen value in archives and data sets? What are the value logics that drive data-driven experiences? What are the current problems of recommendation and discovery? In this session we assess the value of data and ask how the value from existing data sets be realised and we can develop smarter ways to find things moving into a world of curated and nuanced search and discovery.

Dark Data: Bias, trust and inclusion
From surveillance capitalism to prediction products to algorithmic bias there are clearly ethical and political challenges in the emerging data economy. Have even our creative experiences become raw material for training machines? This session will explore the societal problems and unintended consequences of current implementation of AI and what we need to fix to make a better world.

Creative Tactics
Who are the next wave of creative companies building valuable businesses based on these new technologies? How can they balance social, cultural and environmental values with economic value? This session will explore near-future products and services and how AI can be used for the greater good.

INNOVATION SHOWCASE

The Innovation Showcase will feature outputs from creative research-led project that explore new and novel ways to push the boundaries of what is possible. Find out more.

EARLY CAREER RESEARCHER POSTER EXHIBITION

The exhibition will include posters, virtual and physical models that demonstrate the outcomes of early career research projects addressing one or more of the Beyond 2019 conference themes. Find out more.

BEYOND AI PRIMER - TUESDAY 19TH NOVEMBER, 8-10PM

The language of data-driven technology from AI, ML, NLP and blockchain is bewildering and confusing. This two hour event will demystify the jargon that is used by tech companies and the media that makes the future sound so cool, but very hard to understand. Designed in the form of a game show, participants will join teams to compete and collaborate in answering questions that will reveal what the data science is, and what it isn’t. Developed by the Creative Informatics cluster, the event will take place at Inspace, part of the Bayes Centre for Data-Driven Innovation.

Open to all Beyond attendees, on a first-come-first-served basis, due to venue capacity (80 max). Hosted by The University of Edinburgh.
