Event description
On 30 June 2020 PRONI will host a public conference on the Public Record Office of Ireland, it's destruction and impact on PRONI in future.

About this Event

On 30 June 1922, at the outbreak of the Irish Civil War, the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI) was destroyed in a catastrophic explosion and fire and with it seven centuries of records describing the history of the island of Ireland. Almost a hundred years later Beyond 2022: Ireland's Virtual Record Treasury, with its partners in PRONI and other major archives, are working to digitally recreate this lost building and its collections.

PRONI will host a public conference on the 30th June 2020 bringing together speakers on the PROI, its destruction in 1922 and the impact on the establishment of PRONI's collections. The Beyond 2022 project will explain its work, demonstrating prototype Virtual Reality models and showing the exciting potential for uncovering surviving copies and transcripts of documents lost in the fire.

As we head toward the centenary of the loss of the PROI and the foundation of PRONI this is an opportunity for the public to see how historical, archival and computer science researchers are collaborating to throw new light on old records.

PRONI does not require you to print your ticket.
