A mental hospital receives a strange new patient, Joe Slater, condemned for the rest of his days as a criminally insane murderer. A denizen of the Catskill Mountain region, written off by most physicians as common white trash of the South, with no understanding of laws or morals. A man whose crime was exceedingly brutal and unprovoked, but who gives the absurd appearance of harmless stupidity. Yet at night he fits and in his frenzy babbles poetic boundless words of an entity, a shining light existing on a plane of existence few could imagine. A young intern becomes fascinated with how such a man could possibly imagine such things and determines to use a telepathic machine to plum the mysteries beyond the wall of sleep…
