About this event

Food & Drink • Beer

The University of Sheffield is thrilled to invite you to the launch of a new report by Prof. Phil Withington and Dr. Nicholas Groat exploring the place of ‘craft’ alcohol in our city’s past, present, and future. Be the first to learn about our headline findings on the opportunities and challenges facing Sheffield’s independent alcohol economy.

Previous reports have established Sheffield as the "beer capital of Britain and Ireland", due to the number of independent breweries per capita. The city's high density of independent breweries is mirrored by its large proportion of independent pubs, bars, and specialist off-licences.

This study shows how the independent sector's geography reflects in a quite profound way Sheffield's long history as a ‘city of neighborhoods’ and how the values and working practices of the sector can contribute to a sustainable and vibrant future.

What to expect:

  • Arrival - drinks and networking
  • Phil and Nick will share the key findings from their report
  • Networking and tours of the distillery
