Description

Beyond Detention: The case for community based alternatives in Scotland

Organised by Scottish Detainee Visitors in collaboration with GRAMNet

Wednesday 28th June, 5.30 - 7.30pm

Yudowitz Lecture Theatre, Wolfson Medical School Building, University of Glasgow

The UK detains 30,000 people a year for immigration purposes. The system has been described as 'expensive, ineffective and unjust'. But it doesn’t have to be like this. Evidence shows that community based alternatives work. This event will discuss these alternatives to detention, why some people are detained for so long, and what changes are needed to move beyond detention in Scotland.

Speakers include:

  • Scottish Detainee Visitors' 'Life After Detention' group

  • Kate Alexander, Director, SDV

  • Euan MacKay. Partner, McGlashan Mackay Solicitors

Everyone is welcome. The event will conclude with a wine reception.

The event is part of Refugee Festival Scotland.
