Beyond Intercultural Models is a 2-day interactive workshop where you learn to communicate with confidence in diverse cultural contexts

About this event

Beyond Intercultural Models: communicating appropriately and with confidence in diverse cultural contexts – 2-day interactive workshop

Working in an international environment is a complicated and subtle issue, requiring a great deal more than a list of “do’s and don’ts”.

While this two-day very interactive workshop begins with a review of models proposed by a number of interculturalists and anthropologists to explain differences in national culture, it goes beyond the ‘them’ and ‘us’ fixation to help participants explore who they might be as people with identities that are rich in cultural multiplicity. It aims to develop delegates’ awareness of how the continued use of national stereotypes may maintain barriers that have been central to prejudice throughout history. We are, in fact, part of multiple groups or cultures defined according to nationality, ethnicity, age, social class, gender, religion, political or sexual orientation, etc., with belonging shifting according to the context, purpose of interaction and interlocutor.

This workshop emphasises a non-essentialist view of culture and a deeper understanding of how to act, and respond to misunderstandings and dilemmas through observation, deep listening and reflection so that we can communicate more appropriately and confidently in diverse cultural contexts. This workshop uses case-studies, role-plays, video-clips and discussion between participants will be actively encouraged. In between the face-2-face days of the workshop delegates will have the opportunity to trial changes in behaviour and the individual learning journeys will be shared on the second day in June.

Day 1 : 12 March 2022 (Saturday)

Day 2: 15 June 2022 (Wednesday)
