Event description

Description

Advances in Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology now allow us to study associations between hosts and their microbial communities in unprecedented detail. However, studies investigating host-microbe interactions in the field of ecology and evolution are dominated by 16S and ITS amplicon sequencing. Whilst amplicon seqeuncing sequencing is a useful tool for describing mirobial community composition, it is limited in its ability to quantify the function(s) performed by members of those communities. Characterising function is vital to understanding how microbes and their hosts interact, and consequently whether those interactions are adaptive for, or detrimental to, the host.

Several approaches now exist that allow us to quantify microbial community function, including whole-genome shotgun metagenomics, metabolomics, and in vitro enzymatic assays. However, the utility and application of these tools is not widely known to ecologists. This workshop will bring together a suite of experts employing novel techniques for quantifying microbial community structure and function. Invited speakers will discuss their research programme and the tools they employ to answer fundamental questions about host-microbe interactions. The workshop aims to make the advantages and limitations these tools more widely known to ecologists, and discuss how we can move beyond simple correlations between 16S community composition and host health/ fitness outcomes.
