On 8 November 2016, Ashley Mawby of BTO and Austin Lafferty, Professional Practice Committee Convener will explore recent case law in the area of solicitor negligence and highlight key issues that young lawyers should be aware of. David Buchanan-Cook of Scottish Legal Complaints Commission (SLCC) will also join the panel to launch the recent Newly Qualified Complaints Guidance.
Ashley Mawby is a Partner at BTO and an experienced litigator who specialises in defending claims against professionals. She has a particular focus on the defence of claims and court actions against solicitors and advises their insurers on the whole range of claims against the profession.
Austin Lafferty qualified in 1981, and after working in firms in various areas of practice, he opened Austin Lafferty Solicitors, in East Kilbride. Over the years he has acted in many court cases doing both criminal and civil litigation in courts throughout Scotland. He was President of the Law Society of Scotland in 2012/2013 and he now sits as Professional Practice Committee Convener.
David Buchanan-Cook joined the SLCC in April 2010. As Head of Oversight and Communications, he is responsible for the area of the SLCC which oversees the way in which the Law Society and the Faculty of Advocates deal with conduct complaints and issues best practice guidance on complaints handling and prevention for the legal profession. David has a regular column in the Journal, writes on an ad hoc basis for the Scotsman, and is a member of the Scottish Parliament's cross-party group on Consumer Affairs.
