Event description
SYLA have teamed up with leading law firm in Scotland, Brodies LLP, to offer SYLA members a unique oral advocacy presentation.

About this Event

The event will provide attendees with an insight into advocacy from both sides of the bench.

We have arranged an impressive line-up of speakers all of whom will be able to offer a difference perspective on advocacy.

The speakers for the event:

Tony Jones QC: Tony is one of only six civil solicitor advocates in Scotland to be afforded the rank of senior counsel, this is testament to the fact that the majority of his career has been devoted to conducting advocacy in Scotland at the highest level. Tony is the only solicitor advocate QC in Scotland to be accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as an expert in professional negligence law. Tony has conducted litigations, arbitrations, adjudications and mediations relating to a wide spectrum of commercial disputes. Tony will provide the attendees with an insight into how he approaches advocacy.

This is a unique opportunity to hear from an individual who has a wealth of civil and adversarial experience in the highest courts in Scotland.

Donald Findlay QC: Mr Findlay requires no introduction; he is widely recognised throughout the UK for his unrivalled experience in the criminal courts. He called to the Bar in 1975 and took silk in 1988.He has not only become a leading practitioner in his field but also a household name in Scotland. In more than 35 years of practice he has acquired an almost unique level of knowledge and understanding of Forensic Medicine and Science as it applies to Criminal and other cases and is consulted on these matters by solicitors from all over the UK.

For a number of year’s he has Lectured at Glasgow University to the Students of the Diploma in Forensic Medicine and is now a course examiner.

His advocacy skills are renowned and attendees will have the opportunity to hear from Mr Findlay on addressing a jury.

Lady Wise: Lady Wise was appointed Judge of the Supreme Courts in February 2013. Lady Wise is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and of McGill University, Montreal. She qualified as a solicitor in 1989 and worked for Morton Fraser from 1989 to 1992, dealing in general civil litigation. She called to the bar in 1993, working in civil litigation and specialising in family law. In 2005 she became a QC. She has been a member of the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Faculty of Advocates since 2005 and from 2008 has acted as a Temporary Judge in the Court of Session.

We are very grateful to Brodies for their support in arranging this event. They have very kindly arranged for refreshments following the conference and we would be delighted if attendees would stay for some light refreshments and an opportunity to meet the speakers and network.
