Review:

Almost everyone involved in indie filmmaking prior to the digital revolution will know the word Bolex. A word that connotes affordability, efficiency, creativity, tactility. A portable film camera that could - and still can - capture beautiful images at a fraction of the cost of its larger siblings. This is the camera that ushered in the likes of Wim Wenders and the late Jonas Mekas - both of whom feature in this film - and has served as the go-to camera for generations of low-budget filmmakers. In many ways, the Bolex almost single-handedly defined an era of independent filmmaking.

Alyssa Bolsey, a filmmaker since childhood, might have known the word Bolex, but she didn’t realise her own personal connection. Frayed family relations meant she hadn’t realised that it was her own great-grandfather that invented the Bolex, and more cameras besides. This film is therefore also a documentation of her discovery – an investigation of the man as an inventor, but also as a father, as a grandfather. The result is a fascinating hybrid, a nuanced portrait of Jacques Bolsey in all aspects of his life, utilising both family records and interviews with those who knew him. A must for indie filmmakers with an eye to the past. / Review by Milo Garner
