This session explores the opportunities and challenges PhD graduates face when transitioning from academia to industry. Led by experienced, cross-sector Talent & EDI Specialists, the discussion will provide insights into industry hiring perspectives and processes, the value PhDs bring to businesses, and common barriers in the recruitment process. Key topics include career paths for PhDs across sectors, application strategies, interview preparation, and international hiring considerations such as visa sponsorship. The session will also address unique challenges faced by candidates from global majority backgrounds with real life case studies and offer practical guidance on leveraging academic expertise for a successful industry career.

This session will be hosted by Tao Lou (Talent Specialist, LEVC) and Maria Kariuki (EDI Officer at the British Geological Survey).

This is part of the That’s Me! Eliminating Barriers to Postgraduate Research Study in the West Midlands project. This collaborative project between the University of Wolverhampton and Birmingham City University that aims to widen participation in postgraduate research, focusing on UK-domiciled students from Global Majority ethnicities. This project is supported by Research England under the increase access and participation for Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups in postgraduate research study funding stream.
