Beyond the fold: a hands-on introduction to 3D Scanning Art

Join James MacDonell from the Digital Scholarship Team at University of Southampton's Library Service on Beyond the fold: a hands-on introduction to 3D Scanning Art. 3D scanning is a tool that has been widely used in the GLAM (Galleries, Library, Archives and Museums) sector as a way to engage audiences with material they otherwise would be unable to access or as a archival tool to create an accurate record of an object that is at risk of degradation.

Recent developments in 3D scanning have made the technology increasingly accessible to a wider audience. Join us for a hands-on session looking at how these developments have impacted the process of 3D digitisation of artwork. In this session you’ll get an introduction to three methods of 3D digitisation: photogrammetry, structured light scanning and gaussian splatting, and have the opportunity to try these technologies out using the University of Southampton’s Artists’ Book Collection as a subject. Learn how artwork such as artist books can be preserved and shared in new and exciting forms.
