Event description
'Salvaging' hope in the dystopian universes of Margaret Attwood

About this Event

Walking into a Margaret Atwood novel is like being in a darker, eco-Gothic, parallel universe to our own where most things are worryingly familiar, taken a few steps further than you would want them to be, into the darkness.

Her dystopian eco-Gothic fictions like The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments and Oryx and Crake - and her accompanying research into climate change and indigenous knowledge - plunge us into worlds recognisable as our own but deviated by the results of the Anthropocene, with all its selfish, violent, blinkered, hypocritical controls and thefts, and its deliberate destruction of ecological and human diversity.

Leading Attwood scholar Prof Gina Wisker, of the University of Brighton, argues that the dryness of these deadly man-made worlds resulting from callous stupidity are only countered by 'salvaging', imagining possibilities in these worlds of the reassertion of balance between people, and between people and living things.
