About this event

  • 3 hours

Join us at an Action Research Workshop exploring identity and creative practice.

As part of a small group of creatives, we will work through a series of exercises and creative activities to uncover how our identity informs our creative practice.

This workshop is perfect for artists (of any experience level), makers, arts workers and creative practitioners based in Yorkshire and the Humber. It is in person and limited to 14 - 20 people.

  • Explore ways in how we can deconstruct barriers to help us collectively thrive in the arts sector.
  • Share insights and knowledge, go beyond the obvious and create actions for change!
  • Artist talk by Hafifa Ahmed - Hafifa is an interdisciplinary artist, living in Leeds. She completed an MA in creative practice from Leeds Arts University in 2020. Her concerns are memory, narrative and sacred text (Arabic Calligraphy). Making visible the journeys many go through privately, Hafifa’s work focuses on the subtle and psycho-spiritual processes.
  • Meet some members of the (YVAN) Yorkshire and humber visual art's network team.
  • There will be copies of the Beyond the Obvious publication and more information about the resources and activity of YVAN.
  • Opportunities to get to know the other artists and arts workers in the workshop.

Background

The research coming from these workshops is part of a larger part of research produced in YVAN's BTO2 publication. The publication presents a 'Sector Snapshot' that highlights the lived experience of 15 Global Majority artists in Yorkshire and the Humber. The YVAN Research and Learning Working Group, decided to explore the issues raised in the publication, providing agency to the region's Global Majority artists and arts workers to reflect on their experiences of the education and cultural institutions.

The Key provocations from the project are:

  1. How are we, as creatives, able to thrive independently?
  2. What categories and labels are assigned to you?
  3. What do you want to share about your personal self as a creative, with whom and how much?
  4. What are the changes we need to make to bring equity of opportunity and recognition?
  5. Where do you look for professional and/or creative support?

Accessibility

The workshop will take place in Impressions Gallery, Bradford. The main entrance is accessed via City Park, a pedestrianised area. Find the accessibility details of the building on their website.

There are male and female toilets and a non gender specific accessible toilet. The gallery is located in a central city area and shares it's building with the city library.

If you have any access needs, any questions or would like further information please email: info@yvan.org.uk

We operate a Safer spaces agreement during all meetings and events: Safer Spaces doc.
