At its best Twitter performs an important information channel and helpful customer service outlets.

Important conversations and engagements take place all across local government and with residents and businesses each day on the Elon Musk-owned platform.

For most comms teams, maintaining and monitoring Twitter is an essential part of the daily routine.

If you didn't have a presence, conversations about you and your services would continue to flow. We need to be in the space or else vacuums will appear and both misinformation and disinformation will go unchallenged.

On the flip side, Twitter takes time and resources to maintain - and not all engagement is positive or constructive. For some, its new ownership and the changes that have been made are frustrating and troubling (not to mention more expensive)

But much as we might at times feel like it's more trouble than its worth, packing up is not really an option. Council comms and customer services teams have invested huge amounts of time, energy and creativity into establishing strong social media accounts to add to telephone, web and email contact options.

So, how could (should?) we be adapting to broader trends? What can we learn from others. And how might we use some of the data at our fingertips to inform our tactics, challenge received wisdom and make best use of resources?
