About this event

Beyond the UK, beyond the EU – what in the world lies ahead?

This conference seeks to broaden our insights, by moving beyond the debate on relations between the UK and the EU to the majority of the world beyond those borders.

The conference will be chaired by Angus Robertson MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Constitution, External Affairs and Culture, who will also make an introductory contribution.

The economic and strategic challenge that the USA now presents will be tackled by Dr Elliot Cohen who will speak on Trump Foreign Policy and impact on Europe (and UK)

Elliot Cohen is Arleigh Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC, professor emeritus at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He has worked in the US Department of State, and the Defense Department, and written and spoken widely on international strategic issues.

He will be followed by responses and dialogues with experts on other regions and powers from the majority, non-aligned world beyond, including:

Frances Guy, on EU’s southern neighbours. Frances is Chief Executive of Scotland’s International Development Alliance. She has worked for Christian Aid in the Middle East, for the United Nations Development Programme regional office in the Arab states, and as Representative for UNWomen in Iraq. She has been the British Ambassador to Lebanon, and to Yemen.

Dr Matt Barlow– on Latin America. Matt is Lecturer in International Political Economy at Glasgow University, His research is situated in two regions of the global South: Latin America and Africa. He has worked at the Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre at the University of York, as part of a team working with academic and civil society partners across a number of funded projects.

About: The Scottish Council on Global Affairs is the first all-Scotland international relations institute providing a hub for collaborative policy-relevant research and a home for informed, non-partisan debate on all areas of foreign and security policy broadly defined. The Council provides a forum to bring together the public, private and not-for-profit sectors with civil society and academic expertise to encourage dialogue, debate and the dissemination of expertise on issues of global importance. It looks to forge new relationships and deepen existing ties with universities and civil society in the rest of the United Kingdom as well as with centres of expertise in Europe and across the world.
