About this event

In collaboration with the BFI's nationwide "Too Much: Melodrama on Film" season, Theatreship presents a series of nights dedicated to getting swept away by the power of emotion on the big screen. Our season, "Never Too Much," champions the genre's unapologetic intensity, celebrating its enduring influence and emotional depth. We'll explore iconic and forgotten melodramas from around the world, inviting audiences to cast aside their cynicism and embrace the passion, drama, and glorious excess of the cinematic experience. Each film will be paired with a bespoke live performance, a talk, or a new short film, making each night a unique, immersive exploration of the genre's timeless appeal.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Duration: 92 minutes
Rating: U

Cast: Catherine Deneuve, Nino Castelnuovo, Anne Vernon

Jacques Demy’s enchanting all-sung musical is a bittersweet and visually breathtaking masterpiece that elevates everyday life to the heights of melodrama. This vibrant, candy-coloured film tells a poignant story of first love between an umbrella shop girl and a young mechanic, whose romance is tested by the relentless pressures of circumstance and fate. This must-see film’s influence on modern cinema is undeniable, with its bold style and emotional honesty directly inspiring films like La La Land and even the hyper-real, pastel world of Barbie.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg celebrated it’s 60th anniversary last year and for those that missed the BFI screenings (or want to see again with live music!) this is the perfect opportunity.

We are thrilled to have jazz and soul artist Naomi Banks join us for this event, who has been widely hailed as one of the most exciting emerging talents on the UK scene. Naomi’s track 'Enough' playlisted on BBC Radio 1 and she recently played Orpheus in Punch Drunk’s Burnt City and she will perform music inspired by the film in English and French.
