Painshill reborn

Birkbeck Garden History Group Fifteenth Annual Lecture

The restoration of Painshill Landscape Garden has long been recognised as a project of intense research and thorough archaeology combined with dedication, endurance and sheer hard work. In the last few years this restoration has gathered pace, with the Grotto completed and the rebuilding of the Woollett Bridge and the Five-Arch Bridge. The latest re-creation is the impressive Temple of Bacchus, which was greatly admired by visitors in the 18th century. Although still hidden by scaffolding, the Temple will soon be revealed and once more, be an eye-catcher in the landscape, a crowning glory to the Elysian Fields and a triumphant home to the statue of Bacchus. This talk is a prelude to a BGHG visit to Painshill in 2018 to see the improvements on the ground.

Cherrill Sands is a freelance garden historian and consultant; she has an MA in the Conservation of Gardens, Landscapes & Parks.  Her work includes teaching for Adult Education, giving talks to local groups and writing about gardens. At Painshill she works in the archives, gives guided tours, and is a Representative Member for Painshill Park Trust. In 2013 she undertook a Lecture Tour of the USA for Painshill, presenting talks in Philadelphia, New York and Chicago. Cherrill is Chair of the Surrey Gardens Trust, as well as one of the Research and Recording team. She enjoys discovering the endless variety of gardens around the world and all aspects of garden design – while also trying to impose some order on her own patch of ground at home.

The cost of the ticket includes wine and light refreshments after the lecture.

Doors open at 6.
