Bibliotherapy Worskhop, 11th July 2019

We will be holding our annual presentation event on Thursday, 11th July 2019 at St Luke’s Community Centre, 90 Central Street, London EC1V 8AJ. This is an open event, it's free to attend, all our friends and supporters are invited.

In the morning we will be running three workshops including Bibliotherapy from 10.30 am (with registration and refreshments from 10.00am) until 11.30am.

Come and join the Bibliotherapy workshop and discover how to promote the principles of best practice in providing bibliotherapy session which allows us to share thoughts and feelings through the connection of stories and poetry.

The session will be led by Sharon Dunscombe, an independent Bibliotherapist and Founder of The Literary Medicine Chest. Sharon is a passionate believer in the fact that stories and poems have the ability to heal and help holistically address many ailments or issues including alleviating depression, pain, isolation, stress, anxiety and grief. She also knows that they can help “make a moment matter” when read to people living with dementia. As Virginia Woolf once said, “Books are the mirrors of the soul.”

Literature – words - are powerful tools and can be used to make us feel better by connecting us with the lives and situations of the characters; by using them as a vessel to relate to others how we may be feeling. Used in bibliotherapy, they have enormous healing properties and are capable of enabling a deep connection to the work and to others, when read out loud in an intimate group setting. They allow us to come together, to talk at the same table.

About Sharon Dunscombe:

Sharon has been putting bibliotherapy into practice since 2004, after running reading groups for junior school children as part of her development as a Level 3 NVQ Classroom Assistant.

After studying for a BA (Hons) degree in English Literature, she returned to her interest in bibliotherapy and applied to train as a Shared Reading Facilitator at Kensington & Chelsea Library.

She has worked with students and lecturers at Exeter College, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Libraries, Made-Well Community Project, Help for Heroes, Recovery Devon, CRISIS Winter Rough Sleepers and Dementia Pathfinders. She works in retirement villages (St. Monica Trust) and holds sessions at various retreats around the country.

Sharon is also a regular speaker at NHS Conferences and Events and hosts a weekly radio show at UK Health Radio, where she presents a one-hour bibliotherapy session. Sharon is an Ambassador for the Reading Agency’s World book Night and is part of the BBC’s “Get Creative” Team.

The afternoon's programme will feature presentation of two awards:

  • Margaret Butterworth Awards 2019 recognising excellence in dementia care for care workers, health care assistants and activity organisers
  • John Gregory Williamson Memorial Award 2019 recognising and rewarding one creative project, that is demonstrably improving the lives of people living with dementia and their families.
