Description

Sat 28th July & Sun 29th July, 10am – 4pm at Melbourne Arm and Canal Head

Help us celebrate the 200th anniversary of the canal’s opening, as well as the opening of a further two miles of canal following restoration efforts by the Pocklington Canal Amenity Society and the Canal & River Trust. Boat trips, kayaking, archaeology, theatrical walks and more!

It’s our birthday, and all are invited! Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, Canal & River Trust and Pocklington Canal Amenity Society are putting on a festival to celebrate the history of this beautiful canal. There are two locations – Canal Head off the A1079, and Melbourne Arm.

Melbourne Arm will be hosting a boat rally (organised by the Pocklington Canal Amenity Society http://pocklingtoncanalsociety.org/ ) to mark the opening of a further two miles of the Pocklington Canal to boats (taking the navigable total up to 6.5 miles from 4.5 miles, of a total 9.5 mile length). Everyone is welcome to the Festival running alongside this, with boat trips, wildlife activities with Natural England and Eco Sapien, character led walks with Rusticus theatre company, stalls, food and more.

There will be kayaking taster sessions at Canal Head, as well as activities for the family. Our archaeological excavation will be continuing on the Denison’s Warehouse in the picnic area, so everyone is welcome to pick up a trowel and have a go at uncovering the past.

These two locations are 4 miles apart (level walk along the grass towpath).
