Bicentenary History Lecture: The Romans and before
Date and time
A look at the early history of Kirkham and the story of the Roman shield boss found in Kirkham in 1792.
About this event
Sue Long, Head of Latin at Kirkham Grammar School and Thomas Hewitt, a history undergraduate at Trevelyan College, Durham, and School Captain at KGS 2020-2021 will explore the early history of this part of the Fylde and introduce Kirkham’s most significant archaeological find, the Roman shield boss discovered in Dow Brook in 1792 by schoolmaster John Willacy.
A replica of the boss is one of the star exhibits in the Kirkham in Amounderness Local History and Heritage Collection here in church, based on the archives donated by the family of the late Martin Ramsbottom as well as the Church’s own archives. The collection will be officially opened in the presence of Martin’s family ahead of this event.
Admission is free, but we are inviting donations for all our free bicentenary events. All monies raised will be shared equally between Parish funds and a charity nominated by the speakers.
For this event, their choice is the Clewer Initiative, a Church of England charity set up to combat modern slavery. It is run by an order of Anglican nuns who campaign and donate generously to causes related to the eradication of human trafficking.
