About this event
Bicycles, Trees, and Teas is a FREE family friendly cycle ride and repair event exploring nature in Chippenham. The majority is traffic free and has several stopping points to allow people cycling of different abilities to catch up. The ride is part of the Big Bike Revival, and is particularly suitable for adults who are beginners, improving, or returning to cycling.
The route has a nature theme featuring
- FREE Cycle Repair checks at the start 1 hour before setting off . Cycle checks 9-30 to 10-30; ride leaves at approximately 10-30am.
- FREE Cycle accessories
- The Rooted Tree nursery and Community garden at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre
- Avon Needs Trees site at Pudding Brook
- A pass by Abbeyfield School
- The Tiny Forest in Monkton Park
- The tenth Hole Tea rooms - with FREE refreshments
- For those that need to return to the start the route can be completed
The ride is approximately 5 miles and is almost entirely on the 403 Cycle track away from cars. There is a small section on quieter roads at Hardens mead.
The ride is guided by Cycle Chippenham volunteers and has been risk assessed.
Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
As part of the Big Bike Revival grant criteria we will collect as a minimum a name and email address from adults at the ride event.

Frequently asked questions
The ride is intended for beginners, adults returning to cycling, nervous riders and families. Hence the majority of the ride is on the 403 cycle track away from traffic. There is a small section at the start, and near Abbeyfield school where you may encounter some light traffic.
Cycle Chippenham are a voluntary group primarily focussed on improving cycle infrastructure in Chippenham. These rides are new for Cycle Chippenham and are aimed at encouraging Chippenham people to cycle and highlight cycle routes across town.
Due to the limited time at the start our cycle repairs will focus on safety checks and quick fixes and adjustments. We carry some spares with us and will have a dedicated cycle repair person.
The ride finishes at the 10th Hole Tea room in Monkton Park. We will be offering free refreshments in the form of teas, coffees, cold drinks, or an ice cream if it's hot!
We are organising this event in partnership with Chippenham Town Council as part of the Community Environmental Forum , and they have kindly offered to fund some cycle accessories to encourage cycling in Chippenham.
It is possible to park at the Wiltshire History centre if you need to transport your bike. Though the ride completes at Monkton Park tenth hole tea room, Cycle Chippenham volunteers can accompany you the short ride to return you to the start.
Yes we have event insurance through the Big Bike Revival
This isn't a learn to ride session. It is expected that you can ride a bike at beginner level. It is however an easy ride aimed at beginners, nervous cyclists, and adults wanting to return to cycling. Cycle Chippenham volunteers will lead the ride and talk through what to expect .
Unfortunately we can't lend you a bicycle at this event. But we may be able to try this at future events.
Yes please bring your own bicycle helmet.
No the majority of the ride is very flat. However the cycle track surface is a bit rough in places.
Please check the weather forecast for the day near the time. Our aim is to encourage people to use a cycle as means for everyday transport as well as enjoyment. Professional cycling clothing isn't necessary.
Yes, we stop at the Avon Needs Trees site at Pudding Brook for a short talk on Avon Needs Trees by Dr Nick Murry. We also stop at the Tiny Forest, Monkton Park. We will have front middle and back riders so no one is left behind, or left struggling to keep up.
We'll start our cycle repairs from 9-30, so if you'd like your bike checked over please turn up early. If your bike doesn't need checking then 10am will allow time to explore Rooted, ready to leave at approximately 10-30am.
Yes - all bike types are welcome from tricycles to cargo bikes to tandems. It might however be difficult to ride a unicycle on the cycle track!
There are no toilet facilities at the start of the ride as the Wiltshire History Centre will be closed and we are using the outside only. There are toilets at the Tenth Hole Tea Rooms at the end of the ride. The nearest toilets to the start of the ride are at Chippenham Railway Station.
