Event description
Sunday 15th September 2019 at 1pm, Guided tour of Bidston Observatory.

About this Event

Built in 1866 to measure time, Bidston Observatory initially serviced maritime chronometers, a task reflected in the buildings architecture.

The observatory is a local treasure and is best known for firing the one o’clock gun across the Mersey and inventing a tidal prediction machine that calculated the tide times for the D Day landings.

Bidston Observatory is a locally cherished landmark that has been occupied by different research-led organisations - up to now, predominantly in the Natural Earth Sciences. The observatory is currently occupied by an Artistic Research Centre.

The small team running the Artistic Research Centre will be giving bookable tours during Wirral Heritage Open Days, for up to 25 people per tour. The duration of tour is approximately 45 minutes.

Booking is essential.

Please note: this is a guided tour. Accessing the whole building includes some uneven floors and many stairs. Unfortunately there is limited disabled access; however for people who use chairs, or have limited mobility, the ground floor is accessible. All bodies are welcome to join.
