Big Conversations, Little People: Raising 'Woke' Kids
Event Information
About this Event
As parents, our responsibility to raise children who are engaged in and care about the world has never been clearer than in 2020. From global pandemic to political and ecological meltdowns, we’re all doing the best we can in a tumultuous and challenging world, all while trying to raise the best little humans we can.
But if the world continues to be a confusing, complex and at times scary place for adults, how must it feel for kids? It’s our job as parents to equip our kids to engage with the world around them, but how do we navigate discussing things like racism, sexism, climate change, inequality, and social justice? When do we start? What if we mess up?
Sometimes the problems seem so big, we would rather just disappear into our Cheerio and juice-stained sofas than figure out how to talk to our kids about something bigger than potties and sharing toys.
If you’ve been talking to your kids about some of these issues, or want to start and don’t know how, this event is for you. Drawing together parents from across Northern Ireland for a casual conversation about some very serious issues, we’ll share what we’ve learned and to hear what’s worked (or what hasn’t worked!) for other parents.
So make yourself a sandwich and a cuppa and join us from 1pm on Monday 7 December to talk out some big things and try to put the world to rights. Littles lurking in the background (or on parental knees) absolutely welcome.
We’re hoping this event will be the start of a conversation about navigating social justice-oriented parenthood.
There are so many issues that deserve our attention right now, but for our first conversation we’re focusing on:
- Racial justice
- Climate crisis
- Bodily autonomy
