At Hotels.com and Expedia Affiliate Network, Big Data is an essential part of our journey to becoming the world’s leading travel company for customers all over the globe. Our collaboration with AWS, and commitment to driving Big Data technologies into our brand’s DNA, is something our tech teams are incredibly excited about and we love to share these stories with others in the industry.


Our next Big Data meetup is going to be held on Wednesday 28th February at the Hotels.com offices in Angel. The evening will play host to a great range of speakers and take us through the inception, current state, and future vision of moving Expedia’s entire platform and user data to AWS by 2020.

First Speaker – Torq Pagdin (Hotels.com)

Torq Pagdin is the Data Engineering Director for Hotels.com, a challenging and exciting role which he has held for just over 18 months. During his entire career, Torq has worked in DB development and data engineering at all levels for several large enterprise companies.

From data syncing to ETL migration – how Hotels.com data engineering has moved into the Cloud and what we have learned and improved on along the way.

Second Speaker – Anselmo Rodrigues da Silva (Expedia Affiliate Network)


Anselmo Silva is the Director of Data-Technology, Geography-Service and Partner Facing Applications at Expedia Affiliates Network (EAN). Anselmo has been working in Data and the Travel Industry for the past eight years, from Start-Ups, BBC - Lonely Planet to his current role at Expedia.


“Serverless to author, schedule, execute and monitor data workflows.”

Expedia Affiliates Network (EAN), is the B2B partnership brand of Expedia, Inc. Our technology powers the hotel offering of thousands of partners around the world. Everyday EAN produces, processes and consumes more than 10TB of data to drive applications, services and business through granular insights. EAN new data cloud platform is an opportunity to be nimble, simplify and consolidate the authoring, schedule, execution and monitoring of complex data workflows. The talk will explore EAN’s strategy on data processing in the cloud, moving from traditional workflow tools to a serverless approach, leveraging step-function, lambda, API gateway, EMR and Cloud Watch.

Third Speaker – Nuno Castro (Expedia Affiliate Network)


Nuno Castro is the Director of Data Science at Expedia Affiliate Network (Expedia, Inc). Previously Nuno was with Feedzai, Nokia Siemens and Siemens Research. He has a PhD in Machine Learning and Computer Science from the University of Minho and graduated in Computer Science and Systems Engineering in 2006.


“A deep Learning voice assistant for hotel search”

Voice assistants and chatbots have recently received a great deal of attention from both industry and academia. Cutting edge advances in deep learning (namely LSTM) have enabled these developments. In this talk, we will share how Expedia Affiliate Network is using a voice assistant built using deep learning to manage a hotel search conversation with consumers.
