BIG FAT NUDES: A History of Flesh on Canvas
Event Information
About this event
From the Venus of Willendorf to the Benefits Supervisor, the fat figure is ever present on our gallery walls. But has representation led to equal societal footing? Or instead, has the presence of the fat body in art been used as a tool for artists to mock, shock, stigmatize and fetishize?
In this talk, artist and life model Lily Holder will take us through examples of the ‘Rubenesque’ form in art history whilst drawing on her own eight year career as a professional artists’ model.
We will attempt to uncover the difference between works that celebrate the fat figure and works that exploit the fat figure – and with this knowledge, how can our treatment of fat bodies in art translate to our treatment of fat people in wider society?
To follow on from this lecture, we will be hosting a very special Life Drawing class - 'Interview with a Life Model', where we will be interviewing the fabulous Trixie Divine (@trixiedivine) whilst in pose - Don't miss out:
