The Big Ideas seminar series is a monthly seminar convened by and hosted at The National Archives. We welcome speakers from institutions across the UK and internationally to present their cutting-edge research.
The eighth Big Ideas seminar for this academic year welcomes Dr Jean-Luc Cochard, Swiss Federal Archives, who will present the results of two studies conducted to explore the potential of Linked Data in supporting Archival Information Systems.

Is Linked Data an appropriate technology for implementing an archive’s catalogue?
Linked Data is a technology that exceeds the capability of relational databases in many aspects of data representation and publication, and as a result has the potential to support a new version of Archival Information System. However, since Linked Data is not yet a fully mature technology, it still has some weaknesses that could prevent its usage in the environment we operate in. To evaluate its suitability, we conducted two independent studies to verify if Linked Data can fulfill technological and business requirements of an operational Archival Information System. This seminar will share the results of these two studies.
