Event description

Description

BIG IN AMERICA

1898: In Brooklyn, two recent émigrés from Russia, Roza and Moishe Gershowitz, have a baby boy they call George.

In the Ukraine, Russian Jewish couple Sam Bernstein and Jennie Resnick meet and once safely in New York, will have a boy they will name Louis but call Leonard.

In Moscow a young composer of promise is struggling with reaction to a first symphony after a disastrous premiere. Sergei Rachmaninov's fortunes will soon improve and really prosper when he and his family sail into New York in 1917

1937: George Gershwin, a master of new American music, dies at just 38; Rachmaninov is at the height of his fame, and young Lennie is impressing at Harvard with a dazzling career ahead.

On May 18th Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra celebrates the work of these master composers who, from Russian roots, all made it Big in America.
