Event Details

The Blackwater Valley Countryside Trust's third Big Valley Ramble, our successor to Walk the Path, will take you through some of the most delightful scenery that Berkshire has to offer. You will start and finish at a cross, go through a private country park, pass a castle, see where waters meet, and cross a ford by a bridge over a river while enjoying the quintessentially English country lanes and paths that link Arborfield and Swallowfield.

If that’s not enough to tempt you, there’s the wildlife and landscape - red kites in numbers, the abundance of spring flowers, striking country houses, and rolling fields that might even have gambolling lambs in them.

11 miles (17.7km) long, the walk is on Sunday 28th April. It will start at Arborfield Cross, go through Arborfield and Farley Hill, along stretches of the Blackwater and Broadwater rivers, then pass through Swallowfield and back via Farley Hill before returning to the Cross.

We have earned a reputation for scenic and well organised walks. Anyone who has previously taken part will know that everything is taken care of, including light refreshments, allowing participants to relax and enjoy the scenery around them and the company of their fellow walkers.

Event Details

You will be able to choose a start time from 9 -11 a.m. when booking. The walk starts at the Royal British Legion and takes a figure of 8 route of 11 miles or 17.7km.  There is an option to walk a shorter circular route of 5 miles round Arborfield Cross to Farley Hill.

You will simply have to follow the Big Valley Ramble (BVR) signs.  At junctions, if you are uncertain, use the free BVR map we will provide.

Our Sponsor

We would like to thank Kebur Garden Materials for sponsoring the Big Valley Ramble 2019, our most important fundraising event of the year.  Kebur have been trading at their Lynchford Lane site in the Blackwater Valley since the 1980s. Keen to help efforts to preserve and enhance this natural resource for local people and support wildlife gardening in the area, Kebur is delighted to be a corporate member of the Trust . Kebur stocks FSC® certified fencing and timber garden products, recycled and recyclable composite decking and recycled aggregates.

Dogs may be brought on the walk but must be kept on leads and dealt with in a responsible manner.

Parking, Refreshments and Toilets

Parking will be available at the start of the walk at the Royal British Legion Club. Please share cars or use public transport where possible, as parking may be limited. On the 11-mile figure of 8 route, there will be a lunch stop at Swallowfield.  You will also be able to have a drink and a snack at Farley Hill and Swallowfield. Toilets will be available at the Royal British Legion at the start and end of the walk and at Farley Hill.

Walking Safely

The route includes a few short sections of road walking and a few road crossings and most will be manned by road marshals. Care must be taken as some roads may be busy. The walk passes through some fields where livestock may be grazing. Please keep to the paths.

Whilst we will check the route carefully before the walk, you are responsible for your own safety on the walk.
