Would you like to get involved in helping out on rides?
We are offering a FREE days training which will cover all the skills needed to be able to support and run rides. In 2017 we are hoping to run more rides to more location supporting our Bike Belles in making the journey that are right for them. To do this we need your help!
Taking part in this training will not mean that you are required to support or lead rides and is a great opportunity to gain new skills. We know that the best people to support our rides are those who understand what it’s like to be returning or new to cycling and can understand the metaphorical journey towards cycling competence and confidence many of our riders are on.
The days training covers some class room work covering ride planning, map reading promotion and risk assessments and some practical riding around learning best practice for supporting a group ride. The training is normally at lot of fun, with lots of opportunity to share idea's and learn from each other. The training does not contain a formal assessment and is open to women of all with a basic level of cycling abilities. To be a great ride marshal the ability to encourage fellow riders is much more important the speed or distances you are able to ride.
I don't have my own bike, can I borrow one?
Yes, we have bikes and helmets available for loan but please indicate you want to borrow a bike when booking.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
The Life House, Washington has a large free carpark which will be open on the day of the ride. The Life House is situated on Grasmere Terrace, Washington NE38 7LP. Please check the North East Journey Planner for local bus routes.
What should I bring with me?
Before the ride/activity please check the weather and dress appropriately. The weather is changeable so we always recommend a waterproof jacket and gloves. Depending on the length of the ride you may want to bring water and a snack with you. We often stop for refreshments so you might want to bring a bit of money with you if you want to buy something.
What should I wear?
Something you can move in comfortably. We recommend leggings or jogging bottoms which are tight at the ankle. Layers are also a good idea and waterproof jacket is often essential.
How much does the event cost?
Nothing! This project is supported by the Director of Public Health Sunderland and as such the running costs have been covered.
