Event description
The GTC invites all CCI students (especially Film and TV) to celebrate the cinematography achievements of institutions and undergraduates.

About this Event

The Bill Vinten GTC University Awards competition acknowledges excellent teaching of camerawork and craft skills within UK educational establishments. The Bill Vinten GTC University Trophy is awarded to the institution with the highest scoring portfolio of films submitted to the competition. The Bill Vinten GTC Award is given to the top three undergraduate students who also receive membership to the GTC and paid work experience. Uniquely, judging is based on the camera craft skills and recognise the work of the camera operator or director of photography.

Undergraduates placing first, second or third in the individual awards receive a prestigious trophy, paid work experience and a year’s membership of the GTC. Recent winners worked with Director Trevor Nunn and DoP Zac Nicholson on the film Red Joan and with DoP John Lee on the Jed Mercurio hit BBC drama series, Bodyguard.

These awards came about as the result of a collaboration between the GTC and the late Bill Vinten, one of the GTC's most long-standing supporters and sponsors. Bill Vinten said:

"The Guild is an effective organisation and respected upholder of camera craft skills and I hope that this award will allow a new generation of camera operators to appreciate and benefit from the craft and creative skills of Guild members."

Keynote Speaker

GTC President, John Henshall was a BBC cameraman in the 1960s and 1970s and a founding member establishing the Guild in 1972. He left the BBC in 1976 to his own camera effects company, Telefex, and to work as a freelance Director of Photography on some of the earliest music videos. Other credits include Channel 4's Network Seven, ITV's Spitting Image and many other programmes and commercials. John was heavily involved in the emerging field of digital imaging since its birth, organising conferences in the US and consulting for major imaging companies. John will speak about the late Bill Vinten, his innovations and influence on the film and television industry.

The ceremony will also include screenings of the best student films from around the country and announcing the winners of the Bill Vinten GTC University Trophy.

Find out more about the prizes and the ceremony on the GTC's page.

Please book your tickets for this event if you want to attend so that we can keep track of the numbers, unless you were nominated, in which case you already have a reserved spot.
